Case in point- a few days ago it was (for here) very cold, -9C. Then it warmed up and we had a beautiful sunny day with a high of +15C. Yesterday, the wind kicked up from the south and the temperature went from 0 to +12 as the winds increased, eventually topping out over 90 Kilometers per hour. From 2 AM last night to 6 this morning the temperature sank to +1. I know because the wind was howling and the rain was hitting the windows in sheets, making sleep impossible! Then it started to snow. And today this was my view over coffee.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiNLRFu64sBYLV5xzu3jtmS2oLJUzBtwEDsN5xpoegG6J_gnhzJinydoB5CMKlrGyjX-buiLXBlovMKCzsq_RdL-qfbIrtH63X8rIKmZaehp6iMDfrBFAUF477uariO7_wzABWVY7WaweMB_ZtRdLMUR6fT6KZYwgetDi3bnZXz-Wv2_Uu0qIfDPWplv08H/s1890/01f02465-26b5-446d-8806-e9b98c4a0dd2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1890" data-original-width="1890" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiNLRFu64sBYLV5xzu3jtmS2oLJUzBtwEDsN5xpoegG6J_gnhzJinydoB5CMKlrGyjX-buiLXBlovMKCzsq_RdL-qfbIrtH63X8rIKmZaehp6iMDfrBFAUF477uariO7_wzABWVY7WaweMB_ZtRdLMUR6fT6KZYwgetDi3bnZXz-Wv2_Uu0qIfDPWplv08H/w400-h400/01f02465-26b5-446d-8806-e9b98c4a0dd2.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><br /><p>Now the real beauty of this shot is where the sun is rising. Fortunately (for us) we are getting the least amount of snow in the province but at the other end (Cape Breton) they have drifts 10 feet high and the Halifax area has received over 2 feet! It is "Snowmageddon"!</p><p>Here's how things are looking in Cape Breton. (not my pic)</p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEiKNSONe-15tfPzbFfcvq5B8QREsXUNauEI36HIh_tsQcLT8QC2fh6alPVfEVar4exmaNpUdcJUwCCdw_IssRthO4GjXlRJ9S4Rtkh1txc_kXBOBDFQlTPmlzIJbGQQABTMAn_ZEldyDGNyb4xGMxbIdyYrn9ouCTDFcVKEg_LXTSYT2atWxjtYywlYr4fr" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" data-original-height="259" data-original-width="194" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEiKNSONe-15tfPzbFfcvq5B8QREsXUNauEI36HIh_tsQcLT8QC2fh6alPVfEVar4exmaNpUdcJUwCCdw_IssRthO4GjXlRJ9S4Rtkh1txc_kXBOBDFQlTPmlzIJbGQQABTMAn_ZEldyDGNyb4xGMxbIdyYrn9ouCTDFcVKEg_LXTSYT2atWxjtYywlYr4fr=w300-h400" width="300" /></a></div><br /><br /><p></p><p>Needless to say there will be no beachcombing today. It's a cheap build and not powerful enough to cut big stuff- especially using water, not oil.</p><p>Well, I've got news for you guys- you're dead wrong!</p><p>Today I decided to cut a rather large rock.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg5j-6sp_QOrhQoW7nMyGmoKjk9BBUsYo3nWKFbJUj3e3n4T26pqiwz0cX91wnaLOlLrDiyhTl31r6fUxsOry27eI6kswz8vu-0et5r9LTkdyJvW5yus733UndLebxc9oY9wCKeeGB5oG9tpcaBGvPrCEv3bIfW5tXD3RJdtvNK0iUz-Ja0VIHgUP_44DSI/s1890/381232344_1481462655977676_5225750239209760973_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1890" data-original-width="1890" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg5j-6sp_QOrhQoW7nMyGmoKjk9BBUsYo3nWKFbJUj3e3n4T26pqiwz0cX91wnaLOlLrDiyhTl31r6fUxsOry27eI6kswz8vu-0et5r9LTkdyJvW5yus733UndLebxc9oY9wCKeeGB5oG9tpcaBGvPrCEv3bIfW5tXD3RJdtvNK0iUz-Ja0VIHgUP_44DSI/w400-h400/381232344_1481462655977676_5225750239209760973_n.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><br /><p>I don't use a vise and that is a 10 inch Hi-Tech sintered (red) blade that I have "reconditioned" using the Highland Park technique of hitting the rim with a bastard file- works like a charm. As you can see, the rock is a full 3 5/8 inch high and while it's a little macro, it's still a silicate and plenty hard. I cut two slabs.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi7laAaqnM2IVXJdOE1nohINkSkNQmYtjdgwgv4B7Q14ObYrhqZUnhcOEloBO3ZFdhvRM9nuk-Q9a8dfUInsdkOo_ZXtdfwpb38sCZzFHDbJ5JKAnFpEdXk0doqNPcnvAkPvx2TOw4pR8ucVJBtTKHQNshh4iTeX2apgJrQ6dChWwbuU3HlLK8b-F7SVlY0/s1487/381254485_1660537911131947_1626531005062766964_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1391" data-original-width="1487" height="374" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi7laAaqnM2IVXJdOE1nohINkSkNQmYtjdgwgv4B7Q14ObYrhqZUnhcOEloBO3ZFdhvRM9nuk-Q9a8dfUInsdkOo_ZXtdfwpb38sCZzFHDbJ5JKAnFpEdXk0doqNPcnvAkPvx2TOw4pR8ucVJBtTKHQNshh4iTeX2apgJrQ6dChWwbuU3HlLK8b-F7SVlY0/w400-h374/381254485_1660537911131947_1626531005062766964_n.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><br /><p>The first slab was 5/16 inch thick and once I saw what the saw could do, I cut the second 3/16 inch. The saw actually has a vise and a bridge whose position can be changed by using different holes in the deck but honestly, I find that I can get uniform cuts just by lining the piece up using the patterning on the deck. That's beautiful flame agate around the edge. There has been absolutely no warping of the resin body and, of course, no rusting. It is one tough customer. The blade is as true as the day I got it and the Hi-Tech red sintered blade will go to-to-toe with any other name brand in both quality of cut and durability. Because it uses water, even my artist wife likes it and, since she makes paint from the rock sludge, she'll even clean it for me! Check out an earlier blog post to see a painting she did using the sludge.</p><p>If you ever find yourself on Digby Nech, stop by and if the weather is good, I'll fire it up for you.</p>Peter Turner, lapidaryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10202345001898611575noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2032733968807687659.post-42108075983010529892023-08-25T09:40:00.001-07:002023-08-25T15:49:20.917-07:00The Family Reunion<p> A few weeks back we experienced a very rare occurance. Our daughter Lisa, who hand dyes our beautiful Seawall Fibres Yarn, was visiting from the Bahamas. Then our other daughter Sandra, who fashions a lot of our polymer clay pieces, came from Dartmouth. So for three days we had the "Original Fab Four" back together and even had our granddaughter here for a bit as a bonus! It was like going back decades- lots of recounting of family legends, cheating accusations during various games and, most important, lots of laughter!</p><p>Man I've missed that laughter.</p><p>Much time was spent in the studio and there was even some rockhounding at nearby Gulliver's Cove.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi6nhhXf3bCvv4ftwbLZMRL75hny1FmNF6nRiESm2Bw0OB1KW3Zvn7nr3aENA9g0fygNVONQv4yMBIEAfXSaB6QatWjrmx7dMH8sGMzeSMDgQMV2qOqPlKgvTaNA1B-b92sFDjhfynHI4AJSpjOTvVPM8Q3Sux-iq0YDqrRISRysQ6e84YcSAOpRo9p7SLW/s1617/364062196_6191278884332980_1045625213508964910_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1494" data-original-width="1617" height="592" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi6nhhXf3bCvv4ftwbLZMRL75hny1FmNF6nRiESm2Bw0OB1KW3Zvn7nr3aENA9g0fygNVONQv4yMBIEAfXSaB6QatWjrmx7dMH8sGMzeSMDgQMV2qOqPlKgvTaNA1B-b92sFDjhfynHI4AJSpjOTvVPM8Q3Sux-iq0YDqrRISRysQ6e84YcSAOpRo9p7SLW/w640-h592/364062196_6191278884332980_1045625213508964910_n.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br /><p>Gullivers is a beautiful spot on the Bay of Fundy and there is a public hiking trail right out to that point, with spectacular views.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjkbhdielVJNDHe-kIwK24qDqFILEPNKWhhBpAlkybhYqUGUEwVixwer4inxDUPgezQaMQCo42YvRaBRZU3vIaFWn0ADmVVQNBmX6_GrwE8rw8ZDA0Td2yqVHmusInm3Ho3i9z6A02SsISU2_570qJGXWxv8kKKjyHZCNKwnIlxWGOOCFSkRW3TBYUOILcO/s1512/366103620_601474068862877_2464144481023950309_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1456" data-original-width="1512" height="616" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjkbhdielVJNDHe-kIwK24qDqFILEPNKWhhBpAlkybhYqUGUEwVixwer4inxDUPgezQaMQCo42YvRaBRZU3vIaFWn0ADmVVQNBmX6_GrwE8rw8ZDA0Td2yqVHmusInm3Ho3i9z6A02SsISU2_570qJGXWxv8kKKjyHZCNKwnIlxWGOOCFSkRW3TBYUOILcO/w640-h616/366103620_601474068862877_2464144481023950309_n.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br /><p>Over the years we have found some nice pieces there- especially botryoidal and porcelain agate. You will notice that the pics only include Vickie and Sandra. There are two reasons for this. First, I still can't walk very well so somebody had to take the pics. Secondly, we found that in Norwegian, the name Lisa actually means "She who cannot find silicates- especially amethyst"! I know... who would have ever thought that's how Lisa would translate but over the years we have found this to be jaw dropping in its accuracy. Lisa has been unable to locate amethyst pieces even after we have seeded the beach and told her where to look!!</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjIKBpQgJdATWpK_CPiNj3k8elnoZ0ElRzS_iNAKGqK9zGY6t8cvxWmriLpPEINw8zb13wNgm2x3tSTzQJlrQENp_641FNXd0jHcaMCsOos2JpLhOI5jzYhNOVtXTjpDFsKs8NjdotVrJyV_-lHIq4OMAcYlxA_uyClt8UaCPsFWRaK_eVJR_7IpG6CCRjU/s1569/363879759_994531598458429_8606501103097110588_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1569" data-original-width="1491" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjIKBpQgJdATWpK_CPiNj3k8elnoZ0ElRzS_iNAKGqK9zGY6t8cvxWmriLpPEINw8zb13wNgm2x3tSTzQJlrQENp_641FNXd0jHcaMCsOos2JpLhOI5jzYhNOVtXTjpDFsKs8NjdotVrJyV_-lHIq4OMAcYlxA_uyClt8UaCPsFWRaK_eVJR_7IpG6CCRjU/w608-h640/363879759_994531598458429_8606501103097110588_n.jpg" width="608" /></a></div><br /><p>Upon their return, all finds were brought to me for inspection and the usual haggling ensued as to what was suitable for cutting and what was destined for the "rock wall of shame".</p><p>So if you like rockhounding, come to Digby Neck. But interesting jewelry isn't. That's why I make it.</p><p>We live right across from a beautiful beach and got to wondering how we could make pieces using the materials we find there. Thus The Castaway Collection was born.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj7HRVgDmuYM1fjIJZK9yxpyp1VLZtf3LwKhCyvI_YkICdv3-YFotoD4wtqUnjtoPbemqEMW1uZ4bZdmmECFMu2FPfKsED11PT7r2ydOrZDLdXdPUWCLybWVjSgHONDQj5XyDgCsLVGXnOaaBanlJKoSs3VRNRyNZgo9SEuyqOOT4YuvQ4BIm4Zh7SO1bxt/s2144/20230619_152437.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2144" data-original-width="2144" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj7HRVgDmuYM1fjIJZK9yxpyp1VLZtf3LwKhCyvI_YkICdv3-YFotoD4wtqUnjtoPbemqEMW1uZ4bZdmmECFMu2FPfKsED11PT7r2ydOrZDLdXdPUWCLybWVjSgHONDQj5XyDgCsLVGXnOaaBanlJKoSs3VRNRyNZgo9SEuyqOOT4YuvQ4BIm4Zh7SO1bxt/s320/20230619_152437.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><p>The idea is simple- take found items- driftwood, shells, sea glass and rocks and make interesting pieces. I'm being kept busy making new pieces to replace sold items. Here's a real beauty combining a beautiful stone, unique hand fashioned copper setting and a show stopping Viking Knit Chain.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjcT9aE1aLBEUO5Y2YF3EK7HGVEl8J6nlIxRjtsB0zuPK3uaDzBYhxOiR19yWIcc_Y0popDlwXqRMLUBJZ88dGVkGNTpyPK9Pcdd6HoUnsqJmYIedrR_QUqJJhJeXMeVrQOqBxHHaLY5j5IM7YuptAjJb49UTEpDsAObXOijLdRR9wOL2etMffPmxgrjg/s1254/345325367_1477094493123221_2078159853392939958_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1223" data-original-width="1254" height="390" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjcT9aE1aLBEUO5Y2YF3EK7HGVEl8J6nlIxRjtsB0zuPK3uaDzBYhxOiR19yWIcc_Y0popDlwXqRMLUBJZ88dGVkGNTpyPK9Pcdd6HoUnsqJmYIedrR_QUqJJhJeXMeVrQOqBxHHaLY5j5IM7YuptAjJb49UTEpDsAObXOijLdRR9wOL2etMffPmxgrjg/w400-h390/345325367_1477094493123221_2078159853392939958_n.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><br /><p>I have to say this is one of the most beautiful stones we have found on the neck. It positively glows!</p><p>Once again I have embarked on an ambitious project- finish 100 cabochons through the summer. Honestly, if I didn't have my Cab King with the trim saw attachment, I couldn't do it.</p><p>Believe it or not, one of the big problems I have is to be selective. Vickie has found me so much beautiful local rock! When our daughter Lisa, a talented indy dyer visited for the first time she was struck by the beautiful colours of the local rocks and decided to try and capture them in her Seawall Fibres hand dyed yarn. That's why all our skeins are named after rocks and minerals. But while the local rock is very hard, our yarn is very, very soft! It is merino wool and comes from a mill in England and we sell it in many weights and blends. Our resident artist and colour expert curates it into complimentary colours to make selection easier but one can buy any skein that strikes their fancy.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEibxj_Nmkxim-LsGCZYNlyLJAKX9gpYNlMcxj0yGC6c9dbGW_b3-ZYEi61_KuuMLV1LkuBHWh7EJPycKN0cgCCqR69Dpkqulis33E-dSN1CGMYLCQB66REfxMssSkP6d_6CwRR9VS6gn4wfWE-qtxYAtq692RvEyGGwhfQdE7SmarT1xg9qrMvdo4VmDA/s1890/349216367_3598666667031721_7701205190357696605_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1890" data-original-width="1890" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEibxj_Nmkxim-LsGCZYNlyLJAKX9gpYNlMcxj0yGC6c9dbGW_b3-ZYEi61_KuuMLV1LkuBHWh7EJPycKN0cgCCqR69Dpkqulis33E-dSN1CGMYLCQB66REfxMssSkP6d_6CwRR9VS6gn4wfWE-qtxYAtq692RvEyGGwhfQdE7SmarT1xg9qrMvdo4VmDA/s320/349216367_3598666667031721_7701205190357696605_n.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><p>In addition to the yarn, we sell accessories and patterns as well as amazing hand knit items- mostly from patterns designed by "The Real Artist" who is usually around to answer questions from her knitting "tribe". They are all crazy. But crazy in a good way and I love meeting them. I used to be in the golf business and thought golfers were the biggest fanatics in the world. Then I moved to Florida and invested in a sunglass company and started rubbing shoulders with surfers and bass fishermen. I quickly pegged them as being the true fanatics- the hard core of the fanatic universe. But then I met knitters and quickly realized I had found the top of the fanatic mountain- the "ne plus ultra" of the genre. One brief encounter sums it up. A few years back a lady came in from South Carolina and picked out a few skeins. She said that even though she had SABLE, this yarn was too beautiful not to buy. I was unfamiliar with the term SABLE and asked her. She said SABLE was a knitting term and stood for Stash Acquired Beyond Life Expectancy. "I'm 75 and have several hundred skeins of yarn. Do the math!" We should all have such a passion in our lives.</p><p>So if you are a user of yarn and want to see some absolutely beautiful material in an absolutely beautiful setting, pencil in a visit to Digby Neck. You will NOT be disappointed!</p>Peter Turner, lapidaryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10202345001898611575noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2032733968807687659.post-9078731629448452842023-05-04T07:19:00.003-07:002023-05-04T07:19:45.008-07:00Milestone Reached!<p> About 7 years ago, I started the blog to show people this beautiful part of Nova Scotia called Digby Neck and the art we produced here. As an old geezer, I didn't expect many would take the time to read it.</p><p>Boy, was I wrong!</p><p>This week, it blew through 90,000 (non bot) page views - a number I never thought possible. It has been read all over the world and I get such satisfaction when visitors come into the shop and say we decided to vacation here after reading your blog. Can I get to 100K? Only time will tell but it better happen soon because I ain't getting any younger!</p><p>So what have we been up to recently? Well, yesterday I made Vickie a new case for her phone. The first order of business was to cut some of the finds made by "She With The Agate Eye". All these rocks were cut on my 10 inch Hi-Tech saw using their red sintered blade.</p><p>I want to say a word about the saw. I am loving it more with each cut! And having now used it for four years I can make some conclusions.</p><p>1. This saw is durable. I read comments on lapidary sights about the "cheap, flimsy build". I can assure you it is neither cheap or flimsy. Rather, it is tough and durable, easy to clean (more on that later), doesn't rust and the motor is great. For years I kept my 10 inch oil cooled saw with a new 1 H.P. motor for larger rocks but no longer. I'm selling my old friend, the Mercury 10 inch with it's nice motorized feed.</p><p>2. The red sintered blade is as good if not better than my previous go to MK-303, especially if you add a little water soluble lubricant. And I only cut material with hardness 6.5 or higher.</p><p>3. I love using water instead of oil. I cut by hand feed mostly and the water is cleaner, safer and the rocks are clean coming off the saw. As a bonus, my wife is an artist and she will actually clean my saw for me to get the sludge, with which she makes paint!(see earlier posts). She would never cut rocks on the oil saw but she enjoys cutting on the Hi-Tech.</p><p>4. Capacity. Any rock I could cut on the 10 inch oil saw I can cut on the Hi-Tech.</p><p>Now on to some examples. Here on Digby Neck, the agate, carnelian, amethyst, quartz and jasper are usually found as veins in the basalt. Here's a great example.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjHK6NUPbpV0DW_FnzrClrZPXUNy-4LZt6IeW4PzZg6xhk8hJsq0aRGq5LJPt15q4IKkbZjQD4IYyMhueFMO0hxtt_5QepAha5MChc2gXWV5Au_A2gxvJuSXsohI4jCTyc2kcjIbUOnC-5lXhRRernbk4mMyLT4gT9dj-30Ac0tZv7ohCIXGit_zrZACw/s1662/340814488_231275979483220_8434145314595977873_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1558" data-original-width="1662" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjHK6NUPbpV0DW_FnzrClrZPXUNy-4LZt6IeW4PzZg6xhk8hJsq0aRGq5LJPt15q4IKkbZjQD4IYyMhueFMO0hxtt_5QepAha5MChc2gXWV5Au_A2gxvJuSXsohI4jCTyc2kcjIbUOnC-5lXhRRernbk4mMyLT4gT9dj-30Ac0tZv7ohCIXGit_zrZACw/s320/340814488_231275979483220_8434145314595977873_n.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><p>The vein contains agate, fortification agate and amethyst and since this particular vein actually looks like The Neck, I'll make pendants with a lot of the basalt intact. We have some spectacular plume agate and here's a good example.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgJ4cCRBzcbX56FM9_UTa_GfuyG9LaoCyBCxy8kGkOeX_IEBd7hfdmQLQ_wvssRNRQWB1F9-INzFGeL-sq9oVBJEmRcU6N9Kj0KPVVbVgp2-w8MckqYEBgc4I68mVQ83LFS6SILi6ejrsdNlg4KxEToQTNdMpiWc2o1Qs8xjsFwMt_AH3Y6HKfIAYxzWw/s1541/341167168_1400008250758344_8908987052669631102_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1497" data-original-width="1541" height="389" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgJ4cCRBzcbX56FM9_UTa_GfuyG9LaoCyBCxy8kGkOeX_IEBd7hfdmQLQ_wvssRNRQWB1F9-INzFGeL-sq9oVBJEmRcU6N9Kj0KPVVbVgp2-w8MckqYEBgc4I68mVQ83LFS6SILi6ejrsdNlg4KxEToQTNdMpiWc2o1Qs8xjsFwMt_AH3Y6HKfIAYxzWw/w400-h389/341167168_1400008250758344_8908987052669631102_n.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><br /><p>I just love the pockets of fortification agate and it makes amazing jewelry. And we have found some amazing pieces- old glass stoppers, white glass that has aged violet and some with amazing shapes and patterning.</p><p>A word of warning. Since some colours are getting very scarce people are "creating" beach glass by simply breaking glass and tumbling it with either silicon grit or plain sand. It is easy to do but also easy to spot. If the pitting on your glass is very consistent, it is likely man made.</p><p>After working with stone most of the winter, I decided to make some glass pieces. While glass can be easily drilled, I prefer to make it more interesting by adding an element of copper.</p><p>Some pieces just naturally lend themselves to wire wrapping and while I usually use leather neck cords with stone, I often use buna cord with the glass to mimic the effect. And sometimes, a few colourful crystals can make a piece really special.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiH08RBnTX7m3WzSnBVTk6RaRja-MtGC8rSEmKnV-8g7KaHLrAvLSUsAqRIRcT2g6S20QXJjMBANEUEx_L66bsOGqbz8V6rsKpmW2Z7fGsDnpJZqnp62QQLP-K7rR6IO7ekPjdXIrEkIiUtTg2k0ayiJwn2Dm83LnBf1UzS1Cb4mB-AobrJtXYTTyGSpw/s1779/336802212_161149076835116_7400320743108882651_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1710" data-original-width="1779" height="308" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiH08RBnTX7m3WzSnBVTk6RaRja-MtGC8rSEmKnV-8g7KaHLrAvLSUsAqRIRcT2g6S20QXJjMBANEUEx_L66bsOGqbz8V6rsKpmW2Z7fGsDnpJZqnp62QQLP-K7rR6IO7ekPjdXIrEkIiUtTg2k0ayiJwn2Dm83LnBf1UzS1Cb4mB-AobrJtXYTTyGSpw/s320/336802212_161149076835116_7400320743108882651_n.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi_lfVTawnqR6_2SVUUUAL0nlGvty51EpmWokNrcsF1Lef3JjE76IO_9Gw932DG0NMAGxptOg6CmyVynC6Qb9TkiA9Q7bN5w2dN4GUbN_JE-e6iD1J_0r812hmdcLeJWoLzAW1fBXe0T5u1-DqDhbyc7A5F6WnhZBq_nmBFwaItl0M9YANdpvp-__sSBw/s1857/336598947_910070103531151_5234927847908505709_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1857" data-original-width="1812" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi_lfVTawnqR6_2SVUUUAL0nlGvty51EpmWokNrcsF1Lef3JjE76IO_9Gw932DG0NMAGxptOg6CmyVynC6Qb9TkiA9Q7bN5w2dN4GUbN_JE-e6iD1J_0r812hmdcLeJWoLzAW1fBXe0T5u1-DqDhbyc7A5F6WnhZBq_nmBFwaItl0M9YANdpvp-__sSBw/s320/336598947_910070103531151_5234927847908505709_n.jpg" width="312" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhV5D1kTcOtTBKJaZ_hpcr6geomjaRX0Q_jaoycM5c7R0gUJUHF6bOx1smzUyEQDtrWRsLQ9elA4TDaVZmwdidPFAV9Uf4NICIPLs-UwpHH2SKxxLwm-tRX_zxD8-4jglOTsDXSOqcMh_QBb_BtffBPqvfO_k4FaeTi9rErTJ2hSEIoMyMQWG2Z8THvHQ/s1647/338163050_665650798899492_7791365256748076485_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1647" data-original-width="1647" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhV5D1kTcOtTBKJaZ_hpcr6geomjaRX0Q_jaoycM5c7R0gUJUHF6bOx1smzUyEQDtrWRsLQ9elA4TDaVZmwdidPFAV9Uf4NICIPLs-UwpHH2SKxxLwm-tRX_zxD8-4jglOTsDXSOqcMh_QBb_BtffBPqvfO_k4FaeTi9rErTJ2hSEIoMyMQWG2Z8THvHQ/s320/338163050_665650798899492_7791365256748076485_n.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><p>The copper I use is reclaimed and when possible I like to leave some of the old patina to give it character. And while we live far apart, we communicate regularly- sometimes via video conferencing so we can confirm the others are actually still alive (heh, heh). I cherish those friendships.</p><p>One such friend, Cheryl, is an amazing photographer and dog lover. Recently, she revived her interest in pastel portraits- mostly of animals. Wencke, (her Norwegian name, we call her Vickie) is not one of those fake Vikings who wear the horned hats and watch Minnesota play football. She is a pure blood. And as such she is always off on new voyages of discovery. This time, it's all about dying (the colour not the event).</p><p>So now I'm back to the point in time when our daughters were young and I was always afraid to open a door in fear of the science experiment that lay behind it. This morning I found this sitting in the kitchen.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjVjEZaQgzLlXJd6_W2SvX12s-p5IdSRJ-3H9xU3Qqm5ePRwPsiJZnDyB2PHlMqlU3hPuY2xsZw7LM-XiYIWyNsDsy7eclNx4W3DKf9Zz4Fqxom_alELA0HXv4sP_ppgbASZT3r-fE6uWtsf8yqPKMzuqj5vyQtEdj5ErGEAtH6vl6ymhYblWXaXfcbFQ/s1028/325619096_1374931086581440_3971079641976471077_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1019" data-original-width="1028" height="396" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjVjEZaQgzLlXJd6_W2SvX12s-p5IdSRJ-3H9xU3Qqm5ePRwPsiJZnDyB2PHlMqlU3hPuY2xsZw7LM-XiYIWyNsDsy7eclNx4W3DKf9Zz4Fqxom_alELA0HXv4sP_ppgbASZT3r-fE6uWtsf8yqPKMzuqj5vyQtEdj5ErGEAtH6vl6ymhYblWXaXfcbFQ/w400-h396/325619096_1374931086581440_3971079641976471077_n.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><br /><p>What is it, you say? My guess was an old tin can wrapped in fabric but according to Vickie, I was sadly mistaken. This was a can that she had carefully prepared to be covered with rust- not just rust but premium rust- so that when she folded some material around it, it got dyed by the rust. This, apparently elevates it from junk and rags to...ART!</p><p>Here is another cloth that has been dyed lavender by a liquid derived by soaking black turtle beans which, apparently we will now eat. Oh joy.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgNUxtEoXd9FX6LLOE8ALISTeh8Tx4OlfKkvNgBqu1k6RFyEi4yYHP7uIGD0cPIwmKxcqDQ-gLSaUCQF6Wuu7Ke-6sX3Jn79XWS6pdYM1sl-CkGLiF0xd8BZXub6ZEBO-d_3mrWLTFoXCTEnjHcYI-8xOPGt2gJjBlvBaEULlzrLqEx9YNVe4-HJYfjpg/s1209/320589121_1106268087437866_5878905890092974486_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1160" data-original-width="1209" height="307" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgNUxtEoXd9FX6LLOE8ALISTeh8Tx4OlfKkvNgBqu1k6RFyEi4yYHP7uIGD0cPIwmKxcqDQ-gLSaUCQF6Wuu7Ke-6sX3Jn79XWS6pdYM1sl-CkGLiF0xd8BZXub6ZEBO-d_3mrWLTFoXCTEnjHcYI-8xOPGt2gJjBlvBaEULlzrLqEx9YNVe4-HJYfjpg/s320/320589121_1106268087437866_5878905890092974486_n.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><p>And this is only part of the voyage which, according to the Viking, will take two years. It didn't take that long for them to discover America! Another aspect will be to use the dyes and hand fashioned objects to make marks and thus transform a mess into an "object d'art".</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiOf3lQEs7E4UpuyqDDxI0wz1nCtFEBv2TEP9hig2sNdZY9gCK8rA7fnapuLEWFqOmp6nwTlpIIfFKli1qUFdouhgh4JRWsrJOa2hn68to8w95ID81y1_gErvbdRY00zdc5F2ZnfSEoJH-9FKqioui9ZfFckClPDS-AgWKbej_vsdfOthFdzQmS1_Upog/s1160/320383493_1284468039078303_2011474682988490979_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1160" data-original-width="1109" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiOf3lQEs7E4UpuyqDDxI0wz1nCtFEBv2TEP9hig2sNdZY9gCK8rA7fnapuLEWFqOmp6nwTlpIIfFKli1qUFdouhgh4JRWsrJOa2hn68to8w95ID81y1_gErvbdRY00zdc5F2ZnfSEoJH-9FKqioui9ZfFckClPDS-AgWKbej_vsdfOthFdzQmS1_Upog/s320/320383493_1284468039078303_2011474682988490979_n.jpg" width="306" /></a></div><br /><p>Trust me, those hands will never be clean again. </p><p>Apparently we are having the beans tonight.</p><p>Pray for me.</p>Peter Turner, lapidaryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10202345001898611575noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2032733968807687659.post-29767221352397793422023-01-03T10:56:00.000-08:002023-01-03T10:56:08.669-08:00The Phoenix Collection Gets Larger<p>Last year I decided to try working with a new material- used guitar wire. And since I have a son-in-law, grandsons and neighbours who play guitar, I had plenty of strings to experiment with. The wires have as much "memory" as any wire I've worked with so it's not the easiest job but it does open up some amazing unique opportunities.</p><p>Since the strings were being "reborn", I called it the Phoenix Collection with new jewelry pieces rising from the ashes. Guitar strings that once made beautiful music now make beautiful, unique jewelry. They sold well in the shop and on line so I have decided to expand the selection. Since I started fabricating I've made several pairs of earrings with many more to come. Lots of work to do to get ready for winter plus we celebrated our 52nd wedding anniversary few days ago. But we have had time to do some new pieces.</p><p>This is the time of year I make my Viking Chain. Here's how it looks when I weave it on the dowel (about 8 inches long)</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjjylgH_UXWzhY0dsKXoBpuYL85W_WzID2M78MkLUAZfLhkJduHUf8N26MijFuheR8NEReOjzes9ZFJ2zbjwOBOrxsJdKx9dXopLszOugVpqsx47v4ETuSk8-AO3HCVBGmPx5_Is5A6yKovGqxg25s3W8n9efsYDwOUR7wWBvd4V-tNT_KTqm3p4RNvRA/s1078/313856586_3343846285898202_5009579068641065087_n%20(1).jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1078" data-original-width="1072" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjjylgH_UXWzhY0dsKXoBpuYL85W_WzID2M78MkLUAZfLhkJduHUf8N26MijFuheR8NEReOjzes9ZFJ2zbjwOBOrxsJdKx9dXopLszOugVpqsx47v4ETuSk8-AO3HCVBGmPx5_Is5A6yKovGqxg25s3W8n9efsYDwOUR7wWBvd4V-tNT_KTqm3p4RNvRA/s320/313856586_3343846285898202_5009579068641065087_n%20(1).jpg" width="318" /></a></div><br /><p>And here's how it looks after I have drawn it through successively smaller holes in my draw plate. Now about 17 inches long. This one was done in 24 gauge copper but my next attempt will be with a thicker, 22 gauge wire.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjpQLsshkvTfnHy13olF3BM9uhvFAauW3TmJMOCraXSXjp9GL7tv62189E90EEi-BG2abCaRsUgtrm8Jl27aOkaKhZz5VhTkkhbLEXkKbW829o8jqwaU5-4a3pINzBgSqWhXQ4bjyR6mtD7-Lrky0G8MAc6oOhxrpj8ujU_OQip_Q18GdKDTp3jqH35pw/s2048/314987097_564800325653408_4795117173719704358_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1945" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjpQLsshkvTfnHy13olF3BM9uhvFAauW3TmJMOCraXSXjp9GL7tv62189E90EEi-BG2abCaRsUgtrm8Jl27aOkaKhZz5VhTkkhbLEXkKbW829o8jqwaU5-4a3pINzBgSqWhXQ4bjyR6mtD7-Lrky0G8MAc6oOhxrpj8ujU_OQip_Q18GdKDTp3jqH35pw/s320/314987097_564800325653408_4795117173719704358_n.jpg" width="304" /></a></div><br /><p>I have also been collaborating with Vickie on some pieces. Vickie is a master of polymer clay and has developed several of her own techniques while perfecting museum quality jewelry. This time we used one of her beads, featuring a technique she calls her "Burlesque Blend" and hung it on an upcycled guitar string. Vickie also fashioned the wire work and bead work while I did the connectors at the back</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi9z5cqChmDWvz9LWDtoGVKHC0B4Qsub9AqXvV7hzx3t0xO5qbfvVRJ5hGPN81DHJaNMGfwsrvp1E1XbBnGINtTYAyc16UxMSctSpSTnRY1wVNpzbRn1V6bdzzzp1p2rdcpfbuLy1-_3wdywolC26I33v3Pb0KMRsHIUJRTflSu4jL_AyrgdhKmdtXVjw/s1022/317357730_3378174879122866_1118747245040682222_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1022" data-original-width="976" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi9z5cqChmDWvz9LWDtoGVKHC0B4Qsub9AqXvV7hzx3t0xO5qbfvVRJ5hGPN81DHJaNMGfwsrvp1E1XbBnGINtTYAyc16UxMSctSpSTnRY1wVNpzbRn1V6bdzzzp1p2rdcpfbuLy1-_3wdywolC26I33v3Pb0KMRsHIUJRTflSu4jL_AyrgdhKmdtXVjw/s320/317357730_3378174879122866_1118747245040682222_n.jpg" width="306" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEif7n57rsF0vFh6TYtu0tHhxX7V-cfVZtWJuiwFY9aUhpSBMNXyE9ICsmhwRtt4HfF8_gdg5g2wi3Eo0ZA1CkohVtVtYhm9P9gk3ocug5QYKq0mE1HzlzmeaLdEViUfmJNKLKvjOHEBXmkg2AErmFGk0cGw4j8egSdq-0TQ2NFdbT6k4XrS8TuOwIDISg/s756/318452186_1513307705820256_4957740309880435827_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="716" data-original-width="756" height="303" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEif7n57rsF0vFh6TYtu0tHhxX7V-cfVZtWJuiwFY9aUhpSBMNXyE9ICsmhwRtt4HfF8_gdg5g2wi3Eo0ZA1CkohVtVtYhm9P9gk3ocug5QYKq0mE1HzlzmeaLdEViUfmJNKLKvjOHEBXmkg2AErmFGk0cGw4j8egSdq-0TQ2NFdbT6k4XrS8TuOwIDISg/s320/318452186_1513307705820256_4957740309880435827_n.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><p>I was able to use the original "eye" and attach another to make a really unique clasp.</p><p>I have also been making a lot of earrings and while I won't show them in this post, I will show you the display we made using some cool driftwood and plastic mesh. Unless we are away, we are open every day until 5 unless the weather is really bad. We will close for the winter December 15th but will open the shop for those who call ahead- especially you local knitters. If you want to make sure we are open, call at 902 482-2188 or email me at ptoceanwaves@gmail.com</p><p><br /></p><p>Also, since our winter winds can get really bad (and since we have already fished one store sign out of the marsh) we will be taking down the large store sign by the road. However, we will still be hanging our "Open" sign so if it is up, come on in!</p><p><br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi866P4kAM3uAI73ngIpE9qFaybJPMR7k-b95-tkjX_fe-XDI6_GKBSnuOzxOXWECX-L4OUjt3f4Qf0gulNot7Z_q4sKeleHFRnxvIwKqBrYuwmTVFk1zOaS9P1cuJsHLjLyV80qOrUZYA1iYfOXNm3ewvswq4wr9NZ3H-EgVzV8fyMP1Jxio8onTbqCQ/s1023/287354320_322092923459894_7438287229507468183_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="979" data-original-width="1023" height="306" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi866P4kAM3uAI73ngIpE9qFaybJPMR7k-b95-tkjX_fe-XDI6_GKBSnuOzxOXWECX-L4OUjt3f4Qf0gulNot7Z_q4sKeleHFRnxvIwKqBrYuwmTVFk1zOaS9P1cuJsHLjLyV80qOrUZYA1iYfOXNm3ewvswq4wr9NZ3H-EgVzV8fyMP1Jxio8onTbqCQ/s320/287354320_322092923459894_7438287229507468183_n.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhupJ1zrzp5HmHjZyYTxzHayjHPcp5jp7Z8cC5BWagoAhq1SvI8MLWlzRpKr2_GYKViNjAREe5FZ67JsUNRA5jCeaRQUsiFsMhTDKNQTSGaSlfCN7pS-CnE47Rj5DIlJwUf-a3TWWxdPshStNZY1Rt5JdGH1MQuk7QSkK3v9q3YbAUNDR0un56BCwrOpA/s721/279476344_338319901620919_8888676189745230563_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="697" data-original-width="721" height="309" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhupJ1zrzp5HmHjZyYTxzHayjHPcp5jp7Z8cC5BWagoAhq1SvI8MLWlzRpKr2_GYKViNjAREe5FZ67JsUNRA5jCeaRQUsiFsMhTDKNQTSGaSlfCN7pS-CnE47Rj5DIlJwUf-a3TWWxdPshStNZY1Rt5JdGH1MQuk7QSkK3v9q3YbAUNDR0un56BCwrOpA/s320/279476344_338319901620919_8888676189745230563_n.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgbgTiZFcba-VuEnx_kxyGkoXTB9Djp8LJJFEUm_zOLjRcuCxiN-UST71UcdnvJDhYt5qoOpggAPVwQPDqtv3u-ys3iaFdpvZMmfomuG_-hKhk2cYk14ZR0QbvlsGmoZ4xKripInNjSM85N6nR53RFs06qd5uOUmzYjLizFCnlOgFK0mKWSP7ZSodYzig/s2048/123471764_2131333210344839_6556209362433712394_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1152" data-original-width="2048" height="180" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgbgTiZFcba-VuEnx_kxyGkoXTB9Djp8LJJFEUm_zOLjRcuCxiN-UST71UcdnvJDhYt5qoOpggAPVwQPDqtv3u-ys3iaFdpvZMmfomuG_-hKhk2cYk14ZR0QbvlsGmoZ4xKripInNjSM85N6nR53RFs06qd5uOUmzYjLizFCnlOgFK0mKWSP7ZSodYzig/s320/123471764_2131333210344839_6556209362433712394_n.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgO6pdiSyKtx4NzZvSev-0EvC13SgIuy5FNfvELy3ymYBGZCzLfFM7VpMJod0ygWHi6aoYBE5dMH3eqyTKWoyjNrOnlMAURdn75l5gdGormtvg6MaUtL-rj_PArNHU-GOLFB17kEu8pUXGtXxIqG6lOLNgdZjgGFUuDkOE8irZu0MhbR63i08tgYeF0bw/s1200/17776629_1315003798555092_1190489749_o.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="675" data-original-width="1200" height="180" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgO6pdiSyKtx4NzZvSev-0EvC13SgIuy5FNfvELy3ymYBGZCzLfFM7VpMJod0ygWHi6aoYBE5dMH3eqyTKWoyjNrOnlMAURdn75l5gdGormtvg6MaUtL-rj_PArNHU-GOLFB17kEu8pUXGtXxIqG6lOLNgdZjgGFUuDkOE8irZu0MhbR63i08tgYeF0bw/s320/17776629_1315003798555092_1190489749_o.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><p><br /></p>Peter Turner, lapidaryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10202345001898611575noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2032733968807687659.post-46904148536066912302022-10-28T10:19:00.002-07:002022-10-28T10:19:48.069-07:00What's New at The Artist's Mark?<p> We are now well into fall and that means I get to start making pieces with all the beautiful stones I created through the summer. For anyone planning a trip to Nova Scotia, this is a great time to come.</p><p> One of the things I really enjoy when visitors come to the shop is showing all the things we actually do. Earlier in the summer we had a visitor who also does lapidary and when I showed him how Vickie made paint from the rock sludge, he said he would send us a piece from his stash and sure enough, he did. It was a fist sized piece of jasper from Africa that was amazingly fine grained and the most beautiful orange/ red colour. After cutting a small slice to use in making some jewelry pieces we proceeded to use the Cab King to grind it down to a fine powder.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhHinyJy7-llroTI6fe0JEjp8HIKUmhVj8TKRxIg2_Rj2gRlp6XdTsD5AS800BiFanChYcvdek36jOqyn5poEMm925OAamYZCbbFqCYqhdQvmH13Un4U4acNAWceD4V3K-TfMeOc8EKjHckgATxGLKHI5x5uTSZvkG6wf-byMNq3cRx-N2gDXMjwukezQ/s1076/307427329_1020684621958537_2908845101243185431_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="989" data-original-width="1076" height="294" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhHinyJy7-llroTI6fe0JEjp8HIKUmhVj8TKRxIg2_Rj2gRlp6XdTsD5AS800BiFanChYcvdek36jOqyn5poEMm925OAamYZCbbFqCYqhdQvmH13Un4U4acNAWceD4V3K-TfMeOc8EKjHckgATxGLKHI5x5uTSZvkG6wf-byMNq3cRx-N2gDXMjwukezQ/s320/307427329_1020684621958537_2908845101243185431_n.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><p>Then Vickie got to work collecting the dried rock dust and here is just a fraction of what she was able to get.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh0UfEPk3VxHsJI83I8EXA4VlVAS1G7O6a88KtkXfKGO6uee_2_XzxohA32VnU6XgB7TnLgt0ddOIo-9TG7I_QdvXd1zLroivOEbmEw-RcXdF0VykBOS32xKce2MDD7YIFTPZqaos2W8uRorp64GyZvzGEGxfzPMJAmYh8w6BA0uRxpADTQmoq5joiOnQ/s995/308127222_821156435734552_2519312092919892735_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="978" data-original-width="995" height="315" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh0UfEPk3VxHsJI83I8EXA4VlVAS1G7O6a88KtkXfKGO6uee_2_XzxohA32VnU6XgB7TnLgt0ddOIo-9TG7I_QdvXd1zLroivOEbmEw-RcXdF0VykBOS32xKce2MDD7YIFTPZqaos2W8uRorp64GyZvzGEGxfzPMJAmYh8w6BA0uRxpADTQmoq5joiOnQ/s320/308127222_821156435734552_2519312092919892735_n.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><p>She then did a test run to see what quality of paint she could make and was very pleasantly surprised!</p><p>Here's how it looked using slightly different mediums and paper.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj6Yg_8FI0hscPAn7mclIjxuDNtGo9Cwyfyw-Ns5zqK3D8fCliQs_WzgN-im6qWAKRc7Obp83OTTQJypXRsDNB-Bx7BugUXHa0rNzqc77hQyrvBiuVs1vSPC58eIrJDvqp9d0dmrP-rtBwXfUOOhks-8DXiQDGGim-IkHJJYdHgRrVK-023OOiuqhhVDQ/s1029/307485233_632600551761065_5610123923024268858_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1029" data-original-width="990" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj6Yg_8FI0hscPAn7mclIjxuDNtGo9Cwyfyw-Ns5zqK3D8fCliQs_WzgN-im6qWAKRc7Obp83OTTQJypXRsDNB-Bx7BugUXHa0rNzqc77hQyrvBiuVs1vSPC58eIrJDvqp9d0dmrP-rtBwXfUOOhks-8DXiQDGGim-IkHJJYdHgRrVK-023OOiuqhhVDQ/s320/307485233_632600551761065_5610123923024268858_n.jpg" width="308" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgmnMSpKvJfPC9u7g1yemW-vn22QBUPQZ9bx5b-7nqeM5xoMguSF5ob_F-PPwSnqyOvw_GJjxM7v4VNvCgadEHAUbHhKXHf5yNN7WqLIL0aExnOucXLF1YvYaEWrh89a4YOZrMEXz9Ym3Kno1aQEeL5nRxL26ZB2lkG2dw9yEPmJ-77bkeDpDMi_mRPAQ/s1059/308002354_5247695085360063_7897072713351950888_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1059" data-original-width="988" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgmnMSpKvJfPC9u7g1yemW-vn22QBUPQZ9bx5b-7nqeM5xoMguSF5ob_F-PPwSnqyOvw_GJjxM7v4VNvCgadEHAUbHhKXHf5yNN7WqLIL0aExnOucXLF1YvYaEWrh89a4YOZrMEXz9Ym3Kno1aQEeL5nRxL26ZB2lkG2dw9yEPmJ-77bkeDpDMi_mRPAQ/s320/308002354_5247695085360063_7897072713351950888_n.jpg" width="299" /></a></div><br /><p>And with the slice I kept, I was able to make several pieces. First I want to thank all the nice people who stopped by and supported us (you know who you are!). We had time to do a bit of experimenting and here are two guitar picks Vickie made from polymer clay.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgd8GANJrJqOmNnpJ5Yt8d6tG1Szd7AitXWJP0YgYduJDs3Po3jVt1RQF-ThEyl6I-PEnzNSmUVVIoViXHh3xHzqZTDTVdNeVNzsKy6STApR7WH0OZNkSd-7NOmxg8LbPdHnTt-YSOje347q1J7zHQbFLh-bvGspCDV53AFxRLKLwm78oWCxdSRu3u6qg/s983/297707044_368465462144433_6481432449224255060_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="983" data-original-width="973" height="200" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgd8GANJrJqOmNnpJ5Yt8d6tG1Szd7AitXWJP0YgYduJDs3Po3jVt1RQF-ThEyl6I-PEnzNSmUVVIoViXHh3xHzqZTDTVdNeVNzsKy6STApR7WH0OZNkSd-7NOmxg8LbPdHnTt-YSOje347q1J7zHQbFLh-bvGspCDV53AFxRLKLwm78oWCxdSRu3u6qg/w198-h200/297707044_368465462144433_6481432449224255060_n.jpg" width="198" /></a></div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEit8aQ1BK9fza1JTWHvSNNCqKCrNXm3Dx6Pi2zeHDhH4vQ5X4fuGGAEiOaiicg-UID0vvdA0TxJQKVSeWzKo7mCNmucv_0dyX93cSr1LDuJT_jEQSr7UJd653Fa-kAO8I2ITbyYGv08o-wlA_GQ5YpoSMHLlUKqgiFchDohw-m43XqcfF9Pu8-awSk26g/s1074/299248959_745620373385230_1758693324396642624_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1074" data-original-width="980" height="200" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEit8aQ1BK9fza1JTWHvSNNCqKCrNXm3Dx6Pi2zeHDhH4vQ5X4fuGGAEiOaiicg-UID0vvdA0TxJQKVSeWzKo7mCNmucv_0dyX93cSr1LDuJT_jEQSr7UJd653Fa-kAO8I2ITbyYGv08o-wlA_GQ5YpoSMHLlUKqgiFchDohw-m43XqcfF9Pu8-awSk26g/w183-h200/299248959_745620373385230_1758693324396642624_n.jpg" width="183" /><br /></a><br /><p>Thank you so much Jonathan for your detailed professional evaluation!</p><p>Vickie was also busy knitting socks from our gorgeous Seawall Fibres hand dyed yarn.
